About

Prof. Dr Olivier Verborgt is an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in shoulder surgery. He obtained a PhD in medical sciences at the University of Antwerp in 2003 and completed his training as an orthopaedic surgeon there in 2004.

He then focused on the shoulder during fellowships at the Clinique Jouvenet in Paris and Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, and as a research fellow at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. From 2005 to 2011 he led the shoulder surgery unit at AZ Sint-Lucas in Bruges; in 2011 he joined ORTHOCA and AZ Monica.

He is affiliated with Antwerp University Hospital (UZA), where he heads the orthopaedics department, and is a professor at the University of Antwerp. He is a former president of the Belgian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (BVOT), a committee member of the European Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and the Elbow (SECEC) and a member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES).

His research addresses clinical and fundamental questions in shoulder pathology. He has authored or co-authored more than sixty publications in scientific journals and is regularly invited as faculty at international shoulder congresses. At the SECEC congress in Barcelona (September 2026) he delivered the presidential lecture, the congress's lecture of honour: a distinction the European society reserves for surgeons with an international track record. Our colleague at ORTHOCA, Prof. Dr Roger van Riet, served as president of SECEC and recently handed over the presidency. He consults in Antwerp, Brussels and at UZA.
